Reviewer's comment:
I went into this book with an expectation about learning more about the Black experience. I must say I'm disappointed mostly that this goal was not achieved. I think the experiences of the writers added the LGBTQI which clouded my understanding of whether this was black or Queer. I did get the impression that a liberal dose of God is what is missing in this modern secular world which is rapidly awarding absurd views as mainstream.
Pros
I liked hearing from different authors
Cons
I couldn't follow a consistent theme

Reviewer's comment:
I really enjoyed this book. It was heart wrenching at times and as I read further and further it forced me to read the stories from a different perspective. The first half of the book I was reading through my own lenses and it made it hard to relate because I am a white, straight, middle classed male from Australia. The second half of the book, after trying to change my lens had a much deeper effect on my. I saw the stories differently and it completely changed how I interpreted the book. This is not a book I would have picked up before this, and am very glad that I did. Reviewing the book. I do feel that because the stories were short and there wasn't a flow on from writer to writer, it felt quite disjointed. This also made it harder to really connect with the people in the stories, because by the time I got there, it was over and we were moving onto something else. The stories and the messages, were insightful, heart wrenching and inspiring all at the same time. And even though there is a lack of flow between the chapters, I would still recommend everyone to read it. But first, take off your current lenses, and read it with zero predetermined ideas.
Pros
Amazing stories
Insightful
Educational
Connection through authentic lived experiences
Cons
Disjointed reading
Takes a few chapters to really get into it

Reviewer's comment:
I really enjoyed the themes of the book, and it got me really thinking about my own shame and vulnerability, after reading about the communities who are doing it more difficult than I am. The stories are short for each person, so it probably lacked the emotional connection you'd get if we got more information around them.
Pros
Eye-Opening!
Cons
Stories too short
